A Guide to Choosing the Right Device (And What They’re Not Telling You)

At Alchemy I.T., we get this question all the time: “Should I buy a Chromebook or a regular laptop?” And it’s a great question—because while they might look similar, Chromebooks and traditional laptops function very differently under the hood. Yet the confusion persists.

Let’s break it down in plain terms: what’s the difference, what can each machine do, what are their pros and cons, and—more importantly—which one makes the most sense for you?

Chromebook vs. Laptop: A Quick Overview

Feature Chromebook Traditional Laptop
Operating System ChromeOS (Google) Windows/macOS/Linux
Primary Use Web browsing, streaming, Google apps Broad range: productivity, gaming, design, etc.
Software Compatibility Web-based & Android apps Full desktop apps (e.g., Microsoft Office, Photoshop)
Storage Cloud-based (minimal internal storage) Local storage (HDD/SSD, upgradable on many models)
Hardware Lightweight, basic specs Wide range from basic to high-performance
Price Budget-friendly Ranges from budget to premium
Battery Life Excellent (8 to 12 hours avg) Varies by model (3 to 12+ hours)
Offline Use Limited Full offline capabilities

Pros & Cons

✅ Chromebook Pros:
  • Lightweight & fast for basic tasks
  • Affordable pricing, great for students or casual users
  • Long battery life
  • Simple and secure system (automatic updates and sandboxing)
❌ Chromebook Cons:
  • Limited software support (no native Microsoft Office or Adobe apps)
  • Offline functionality is limited (many apps require internet)
  • Gaming and advanced media editing are mostly off the table
✅ Laptop Pros:
  • Runs full-featured desktop applications
  • Can handle high-performance tasks (design, editing, programming)
  • Flexible and upgradeable (in many models)
  • Great for gaming and professional software
❌ Laptop Cons:
  • Can be more expensive depending on specs
  • Some models have shorter battery life
  • More vulnerable to malware if not properly maintained

The Rise of Non-Repairable Hardware

One major consideration when purchasing a new device—especially in 2024 and beyond—is repairability.

Both Chromebooks and many newer laptops (including Apple MacBooks and budget Windows laptops) are now being manufactured with soldered RAM and storage. That means:

  • 🔩 You can’t upgrade your RAM or hard drive later.
  • 🔧 If a component fails, repairs can be difficult or even impossible.
  • 💸 You might need to replace the whole motherboard (or entire device), which is expensive.

This move, often made in the name of “slimmer designs” or cost efficiency for manufacturers, is a major downside for long-term ownership.

So when choosing a new device, always ask: Can I upgrade or repair this later? At Alchemy I.T., we’re happy to help you find models that are still repair-friendly.

Use Case Scenarios: Which One Should You Choose?

Scenario Recommended Device Why
Student (basic web use, Google Docs) Chromebook Affordable, great battery life, simple interface
Professional working with Office Suite & Zoom Windows/Mac Laptop Better software support, more reliable performance
Graphic design, video editing, or CAD work Laptop (mid to high-end) Requires full desktop software and power
Gaming Windows Laptop Chromebooks aren’t built for gaming (even cloud-based options are limited)
Web browsing, email, Netflix Chromebook Lightweight, affordable, long battery life
Frequent traveler or remote worker Laptop (ultrabook or lightweight) Balance of power, battery life, and app support

Final Thoughts: It’s Not One-Size-Fits-All

Chromebooks can be fantastic devices for the right person—but they’re not a direct substitute for a full-featured laptop. If you’re someone who spends 90% of your computer time in a browser and doesn’t need heavy software, a Chromebook might be just right.

But if you want flexibility, power, and upgrade potential, a traditional laptop is still the clear winner.

Before you buy, talk to someone who’s been inside these machines (literally). At Alchemy I.T., we know the pros, cons, and hidden pitfalls of modern tech—and we’re always happy to help you make the right call.
